Centennial

On July 3, 1908, a new municipality was incorporated in what was then Dade County: the town of Pompano. Purportedly named by a surveyor for the fish he had been served while working in the area, the community had a population of about 250 residents.

That little town, now known as Pompano Beach, is today a major city of over 100,000 people, and is fast approaching an event that few other cities in South Florida have experienced – its 100th birthday.

Such a special occasion requires a special celebration, and a volunteer committee has been formed by the Pompano Beach City Commission to make plans for the city’s century celebration.

Officially called the Pompano Beach Centennial Celebration Committee, its members now number in the dozens and represent every section of the city. Membership is open to all residents who have an interest in planning for what will be the biggest birthday party Pompano Beach has ever seen.

The Centennial Celebration Committee meets the fourth Wednesday of the month at the Pompano Beach Historical Society, 217 NE 4th Avenue, Pompano Beach.
